Washington, DC (April 5, 2017) — Syria Relief and Development (SRD) strongly condemns yesterday’s chemical attacks in Khan Sheikhoun that killed at least 74 people, including 23 children, and injured over 557 others based on reports from the area. Hospitals are overcrowded with victims of the attack who are suffering from respiratory problems, loss of consciousness, foamy oral secretions, vomiting, cardiac issues, muscle spasms and other neurological issues.

The airstrikes on Idleb released poisonous gases in what is now one of the worst chemical attacks to occur in the country. As SRD has done before in previous indiscriminate attacks on Syrian civilians, we ask the US government, United Nations and the international community to do more than just condemn this most recent attack, but to also pursue an enduring solution that guarantees the protection of innocent civilians.

“The people of Syria have said it multiple times: ‘We appreciate sympathy but we needed action. Words can’t save us anymore.’ And while we at SRD commit to continue serving them during this tragedy, we also echo their voices and demand a real change in policies that will make their suffering end,” said SRD Advocacy and Outreach Manager Mais Balkhi.

This is not the first time Syrian civilians have been victims of chemical attacks. A devastating chemical attack in Ghouta, in the suburbs of Damascus on August 21, 2013 resulted in the deaths of more than 1,000 people and several reports have found the use of chemical weapons in other attacks. In all of the chemical attacks that have occurred, the vast majority of victims have been civilians.
