Overland Park, Kan. (Sept. 1, 2015) — Earlier today, one of the largest hospitals in Aleppo, located in the suburb of Hraytan and operated by U.S.-based nonprofit organization Syria Relief and Development (SRD), was attacked by two barrel bombs that resulted in five injuries: three of SRD’s medical staff members and two civilians in the surrounding area. The hospital suffered damage to infrastructure and essential medical

equipment; fortunately, there were no casualties.

Hraytan Hospital’s emergency room is still operating; however, surgeries and other advanced care will be halted until the damaged equipment is replaced and infrastructure repaired. Among the damaged equipment included an oxygen generator essential for conducting surgeries. The staff is already working around the clock to clear up debris and repair the damage and hopes to further resume operations within one week.

The attack is the third to occur on an SRD-operated facility in recent months. In July, multiple barrel

IMG-20150901-WA0004bombs were dropped on one of SRD’s primary healthcare centers in Aleppo and in August, SRD’s rehabilitation facility that specialized in dialysis and physiotherapy in the city of Idleb was attacked by a barrel bomb that also killed two local children.

“These attacks are specific and systematic attempts to target medical facilities that treat the sick and injured,” said Dr. Jihad Qaddour, president of SRD. “The damage may seem significant but it is minor compared to what these barrel bombs are capable of; their use is inhumane and destructive to life, health and livelihood.”

Human rights organizations, such as Physicians for Human Rights, have noted an alarming increase in the number of attacks on health care facilities in Syria in recent months. SRD’s original Aleppo Hospital was destroyed during a barrel bomb attack last April after initially being built brick-by-brick by the local community. SRD medical staff relocated to the Hraytan facility that was attacked just today.

“We call on the international community to demand an end to these devastating attacks and to exhaust all efforts in reaching an end to barrel bombing and the targeting of civilians and medical workers and facilities,” said Dr. Qaddour.
